Valheim servers manage players with three simple text files in the server's main folder. Each one holds one player ID per line:
| File | What it does |
|---|---|
adminlist.txt | Players who can use admin commands in game |
bannedlist.txt | Players who can't join |
permittedlist.txt | The whitelist. If it has any entries, only those players can join. |
Edit them in your dashboard's Files tab, then restart the server. Lines starting with // are comments and are ignored.
1. Find a player's ID
- Steam players: the ID is the 17-digit SteamID64, e.g.
76561198000000000. The player can find it on their Steam profile page or with a SteamID lookup site. - In game: press F2 while connected to see the players on the server and their IDs.
- Crossplay servers: players on other platforms have different IDs. Use the ID exactly as shown in the F2 panel, or as it appears in the server console when they connect.
2. Make yourself an admin
- Add your ID to
adminlist.txton its own line and save. - Restart the server and rejoin.
- Press F5 to open the in-game console. Type
helpto see what you can do.
3. Useful admin commands (F5 console)
kick [name or ID]removes a player from the server.ban [name or ID]/unban [name or ID]bans or unbans them (this updatesbannedlist.txtfor you).bannedlists everyone who's banned.savesaves the world immediately.
4. Keep your world private
- Set a Password in the dashboard's Settings tab (at least 5 characters, not containing the server name).
- Turn off Public server so it isn't listed in the community browser.
- For a closed group, add everyone's ID to
permittedlist.txt. Nobody else can join, even with the password.
Tip: keep a note of your group's IDs somewhere safe, like a pinned Discord message. It makes rebuilding the lists easy if you ever start a new world.
