The best Project Zomboid server settings for small groups

The server settings that matter most for a friendly co-op server, and what to set them to for groups of 2–16 players.

Project Zomboid has hundreds of settings, but only a handful really change how a small co-op server feels. They live in two files in Zomboid/Server/ (named after your server, e.g. servertest):

  • servertest.ini: server rules such as PvP, safehouses, sleeping, backups and who can join.
  • servertest_SandboxVars.lua: world settings such as zombie numbers, loot, and how fast the world decays.

Edit them in your dashboard's Files tab, then restart. The most common options (server name, PvP, public listing and passwords) are also in the Settings tab.

1. Server rules (servertest.ini)

SettingSuggestedWhy
PVPfalseCo-op groups rarely want friendly fire. Turn it on for PvP servers only.
PauseEmptytrueTime stops when nobody is online, so the world doesn't decay while you're at work.
SleepAllowed / SleepNeededtrue / falsePlayers can sleep to recover, but aren't forced to sync bedtimes.
PlayerSafehousetrueLets players claim a base so their loot is protected.
SafehouseAllowTrepasstrue for friendsFriends can walk into each other's bases. Set it to false on public servers.
AnnounceDeathtrueEveryone hears when someone dies. Good for drama and rescue missions.
SaveWorldEveryMinutes10–15Regular saves mean less lost progress after a crash.
BackupsOnStarttrueThe game keeps its own backup each time the server starts, on top of your Nexcom backups.
MaxPlayersYour group size + 2Leaves room for guests without inviting crowds.

2. World settings (SandboxVars)

These are easiest to choose with the in-game sandbox screen, then copy across. These suggestions suit most small groups:

  • Zombie population: start at Normal. If your group is new, Low makes the first weeks less punishing.
  • Zombie respawn: lower it, or turn it off, so cleared areas stay cleared. Constant respawns frustrate small groups.
  • Loot rarity: one step more common than default. Shared loot runs out faster with several players.
  • Loot respawn: leave it off at first. Turn it on for long-running servers so the map doesn't run dry after months.
  • Water and power shut-off: the default timing is fine. Pushing it later gives new groups breathing room.
  • XP multiplier: 1× for the classic experience, 2–3× if your group can only play a few hours a week.

3. Changing settings safely

  1. Take a backup from the Backups tab.
  2. Stop the server, so the game doesn't overwrite your edits on shutdown.
  3. Edit the file and save.
  4. Start the server and check the console for errors.

Setting names can change between Build 41 and Build 42. If a setting from this guide isn't in your file, search the file for a similar name. Your server's own file is always the reference.
